Pike Brothers vs Iron Heart vs Edwin

In this article

Three cult brands, three philosophies, three budgets. If you are deciding between the Pike Brothers 1958 Roamer, Iron Heart 634S 21oz and Edwin Regular Tapered ED-55, this comparison will help you choose in five minutes.
Pike Brothers = best value for money (€139–179), 1900–1970 authenticity, made in Italy/Turkey. Iron Heart = Japanese 21oz denim craftsmanship (€300–450), almost indestructible construction. Edwin = accessible Japanese heritage (€90–200), more modern fits. For a first biker raw-denim purchase, choose Pike Brothers.
Why these 3 brands dominate worldwide selvedge
Among the hundreds of brands making raw denim today, these three have stood out for 15–20 years because they control the entire process, from selecting the cotton yarn to the final cut. None outsources production to an Asian factory making ten brands at once. The result: consistent quality year after year, complementary collections and loyal fans who keep buying the same models for 10 years.

Pike Brothers – the best compromise for getting into selvedge
Pike Brothers is a German brand founded in 1930 and revived in 2010 by Fabian Jedlitschka. Its strength is faithfully reproducing American and British workwear and military uniforms from 1900–1970 in Japanese or Italian denim, with an obsession for historical authenticity.
The flagship model is the 1958 Roamer : a straight-slim five-pocket fit, mid-rise waist and Japanese 11oz selvedge denim. It breaks in over 4–5 months, with pronounced whiskers and honeycombs, 139 € in France at School of Cool. The most competitive value for money in the selvedge market.
If you want heavier denim, the 1958 Chopper 15oz Indigo is their historic biker jean: a high waist and carrot leg designed to fit over engineer boots. Shop all Pike Brothers trousers.
Our recommendationIf this is your first raw denim, choose a Pike Brothers 11oz Roamer. You can always move up the range later.
Iron Heart – premium 21oz selvedge craftsmanship
Iron Heart is a Japanese brand based in Yokohama, founded in 2003 by Shinichi Haraki. Its DNA is about pushing denim to its limits. They popularised 21oz selvedge in 2003 with the 634S, denim so thick it stands up by itself during its first few days of wear.
The brand is aimed at connoisseurs: every year, Iron Heart organises denim meet-ups where fans compare jeans worn for 2–3 years. Pairs of 634S worn daily for 18 months sell for €300–500 second-hand on eBay Japan.
The drawback: high prices (€290–450 per pair), a very long break-in period (8–18 months for 21oz), and fits that are more athletic than workwear. For raw-denim purists who have already broken in several lighter pairs.
Iron Heart is not stocked at School of Cool, but we recommend the Pike Brothers Chopper 15oz as a more affordable European alternative with very high-quality denim.
Edwin – Japanese denim for everyone
Edwin is one of the oldest Japanese jeans brands (1947). It is the brand that invented modern stone wash finishing. Its current positioning is accessible Japanese selvedge with contemporary fits.
Bestseller: the ED-55 in Japanese 13oz denim, with a regular tapered fit. It breaks in quickly (3–4 months), with less pronounced creasing than Pike Brothers or Iron Heart, but immediate comfort. 89-200 € depending on the model. Ideal for anyone wanting everyday Japanese jeans without committing to “hardcore raw denim”.
Edwin is more fashion-focused than the other two. They release annual collaborations (Tetsuya Kuwahara, Beams), wide-leg cuts and contemporary washes. Less biker, more urban.

How to break in raw denim, whatever the brand
- 30 days without washing with daily wear to set the creases at your natural bending points
- First wash cold, inside out, without bleaching agents. Dry flat in the shade
- Afterwards wash no more than once every 2–3 months. Air them rather than wash them
- Never tumble-dry – it damages the indigo
- No freezer – that is a myth; it does not kill bacteria
