Sailor and Convict-striped-Pullover : a bit of history :
Prisoner stripes :
Convict clothing were often consist of a striped horizontal pants and shirt set to make escape more difficult, as different than the vertical prison barells. Also it is difficult for an escaped inmate to avoid recognition and recapture in such a distinctive attire. Originally a horizontal white and black bee-striped uniform and hat was used.
Striped jail clothing were often used between 19th and 20th century in US and Europe.
Sailor stripes :
IN the 19th century, in french Britanny, clothing with stripes finds its origin in a pullover called “marinière” or “matelot shirt”. This clothe is a white, wool or cotton sweater with black stripes. It was inspired from the French Navy uniform from 1858. Each stripe tallied up the military victoires of Napoleon. The simple, practical uniform was particularly popular amongst seafarers in Northern France and was so often worn by the marine sailors of Breton.
